The Body Shop: Youth Concentrate Sheet Mask

My experience with skincare from The Body Shop is incredibly limited. I used to use their Tea Tree Range when I was a teen and struggled with acne but since then I haven't used any. I have no idea why because the Tea Tree range was actually pretty good but since then, the only thing I have tried is the body products and my use of that is limited. However when I saw that they had launched sheet masks I was incredibly intrigued by the idea of the brand moving in a slightly more trend lead way.

When I say sheet masks are trend lead, that is certainly how they started but they have most definitely found their way into the market and now most brands have their own version. The Body Shop are now no different. I don't know why but I didn't expect The Body Shop to launch a Sheet Mask but when I saw it on social media I really wanted to try it. This lead me to stopping in my local store. I simply went in to have a look and find out more about the sheet mask but ended up leaving with three masks.

Drops of Youth

My knowledge of the Drops of Youth range was limited prior to my trip into the store but a lovely sales assistant really helped me out. She was really knowledgeable and genuinely helpful and I did make sure to tweet to say how positive my customer experience was. All within 10 minutes she has taught me a little bit about the Drop of Youth range. Originally she showed me the serum but the serum is what is used on the sheet mask. The whole range is designed to fight the signs of ageing through boosting the production of collagen which as a 26 year old, I am now slowing down on my natural production of the elasticity of my skin.

To show me the effects of the serum, the sales assistant tested the hydration levels on the back of my hand, I was at around 33%, she said anything below 30 is dehydrated. At the time I was starting to come down with a cold so I knew my hydration levels were a bit low but I have to say I was not happy with this result. I take the time to hydrate and look after my skin, even on my body. I moisture regularly but clearly not enough. Anyway she applied some of the Drop of Youth Serum to the back of my hand, rubbed it in and then tested my skin again. Just from using this serum my skin jumped to over 80%. I realise some of this is because of the product itself which in all likelihood would contain water but still, it had to be doing something so I decided to try the sheet mask. I hadn't even gone in to buy the sheet mask, I had just gone in to look at it but in the end I left with 3 masks. In my defense it was 3 for 2 and I had high hopes that I was going to get on with this mask.

After the demo in store, I couldn't wait to try this mask as really I still didn't know what to expect. I knew I liked the Drops of Youth serum that is infused into the sheet mask but my 3 main concerns about sheet masks had not been addressed. My three main concerns are: How big is the actual mask, is there going to be too much serum and what does this mask do for my skin? The only way I was going to find out the answers to these concerns was to try it and that's what I did.

Using the Mask

At the start of February I had a day off post-Superbowl to recover from the late night and I decided that on my day off my skin needed a little bit of a treat as well. I did a bit of a Sunday facial but on a Monday, crazy I know. After using a Charcoal mask, I decided to rehydrate with The Body Shop mask. When I opened the packet I wasn't sure what to expect but immediately serum did not start leaking out which happened with the Tony Moly Sheet Mask so immediately it was a good start.

When I took the mask out of the packet I thought it had a sheet in-between the folds of the mask to help you separate it but it turns out the mask is that thick and it is made of quite a textured mask. Usually sheet masks are made from a tissue so they are quite soft and thin whereas this is very thick and sort of reminds me of the Origins Sheet Masks. As it is a thicker mask it does make it easy to separate so the separating sheet is not necessary. Probably a good thing as The Body Shop is all about the environment so using a plastic sheet would sort of go against that.

Not only does the thickness of the mask make it easy to separate but it also makes it easier to apply as it is not flopping all over the place when you are trying to apply it. As always I started with my forehead, making sure the eye holes were in the correct place and worked down. I always find this is the easiest way to be able to get the mask to fit my features. As always the mask was quite big, that was to be expected, but it was completely oversized like the Alex S x Primark Masks. I actually thought the fit of the mask was great and probably one of the better ones I have tried. I still had to fold it in places but I didn't have a lot of points were the mask needed to be doubled up. Whereas something like the Garnier Fresh Mix Sheet Mask is massive and I basically ended up with a double layer of sheet mask, just to make it fit my face. I thought this fit well around my bug eyes which rarely happens so that was my first concern ticked off, this mask was not a bad fit.

With my first concern checked off, I then thought about the second; the amount of serum on the mask. My nightmare is when serum slowly drips down your neck as there is simply far too much of it on the mask. That sensation as the drip slowly makes its way down your neck makes me feel a little bit sick so it is something I always think about when I use a sheet mask. Also if a mask has that much serum on it, my skin is never going to be able to take on that amount of moisture so I know it is going to be a massive amount of waste if that is the case. As I applied this mask and throughout wearing it, at no point did I think there was too much serum. I felt comfortable the whole time I was wearing this mask which I must admit is quite unusual. I didn't feel like the mask was going to slip so I could go about my normal business (blogging) whilst wearing the mask.

On the packet it said to leave the mask for 15 minutes but I tend to leave them on until I feel like I have sucked every ounce of moisture out of the mask that I possibly can. I left this on for around 20 minutes and there wasn't a massive amount of serum left but what was left, I did apply the rest to my neck. Once I had removed the mask, it says you are supposed to pat the serum in but I tend to just leave it to sink in. This really sank in quickly, like surprisingly quick. Within a couple of minutes the serum had sunk in and my skin felt hydrated but not sticky. Quite often when I've used a sheet mask, I can feel the after effects of the serum for the rest of the night but that was not the case with this mask. However my skin felt plump and looked hydrated. As the serum sunk in quite quickly, I did use a moisturiser after.

The following morning my skin felt and looked more plump. I was so impressed as I applied my makeup, the mask just seemed to refine my skin and I didn't need as much foundation as I would usually use. I've always felt pretty self conscious about my skin but the following day I felt good about it, this is a feeling I've probably felt less than 10 times in my lifetime, so if a mask can make me feel that way I am certainly going to continue using it.

Having never tried anything from the Drops of Youth range before, I now want to try every product from the range. Anything that makes this much of a difference to my skin is something I can get on board with. At £5 this isn't the cheapest sheet mask and it is the same price as the Origins Sheet Masks which I think is quite expensive but this mask is worth it. The Body Shop mask would probably be more widely available than the Origins ones as they are always sold out whenever I go to buy them. Unlike the Origins masks which target different skin needs with 6 different scents, The Body Shop have kept it nice and simply with the one single mask which does everything. It does have a smell but it isn't strong and I would just say it smells fresh and clean. I just think it adds to the gentle effect of the mask.

If you are looking for a sheet mask that is going to make a difference, you need to try The Body Shop Sheet Mask. It is rare for a product to creep up on me without me knowing it is coming out but that is exactly what happened with this mask. One day I saw it on Instagram and I knew I needed to try it. Turns out even though I knew very little about it prior to trying it, this was such a good purchase and it is going to be a staple in my sheet mask collection.
