Summer in Mallorca 01: Sun, Sea and Sangria!

In Madrid, where I currently live, it is still technically spring season. But in the island of Mallorca despite some drizzles and the 20 degree weather, the sun is singing it is summer time!

Mallorca is part of the Balearic Islands, a cluster of islands in the western Mediterranean Sea. Ibiza, the famous party island known worldwide, is one of the four major islands. I spent my four day Labor weekend holiday in Palma, the capital of Mallorca taking in the sunshine!

The Gothic Cathedral of Palma de Mallorca.

A free rock concert at the foot of the Cathedral. How cool is that?

Jet d'Eau (essentially a large fountain) at Palma de Mallorca, very close to the cathedral.

A perfect way to spend an afternoon: lounge on a chair with a copa of sangria, munch on good chocolate, talk with a friend, and people watch!

I am biased of course, but the beaches in Palma do not hold a chance with the beaches in the Philippines -- the sands while fine enough, is not like the white sands of Boracay/Bohol/Samal/Siargao/Pagudpud. And the shorelines are short and not so scenic. But that's coming from an island girl who for so long took for granted how beautiful our beaches are.

Mallorca (and Ibiza) are favorite summer destinations of Europeans because of the beaches so who am I to nitpick, especially when you get to watch someone exercising in the beach like this:-)

The food:

Good Paella at not too expensive prices

British Pub Food: Humongous Ribs and Fries

Italian style Artichoke Pizza

And the requisite Sangria

The prices in Palma, despite being a tourist destination, are surprisingly cheaper than in Madrid. Apparently, a lot of Britons have made Palma their home so there a lot of shops and restaurants with British staff. English is widely spoken and the Mallorcans are used to interacting with foreigners. Coupled with a great public bus system and relatively cheap taxi fares, Palma is a pretty easy place to navigate for a tourist. The place has a laidback lifestyle that's so easy to imbibe. I left Mallorca with a hangover of sun, beach and sangria!
